We all know someone - a friend, neighbor, family member or co-worker - who could use a little help staying warm this winter. Or maybe you'd like to find some assistance for yourself and your household.

Berkshire Community Action Council HEAP

Berkshire Community Action Council (BCAC) offers fuel assistance through their limited income Home Energy Assistance Program called HEAP, which helps eligible households with heating bills. Both homeowners and renters may be eligible, and applications are accepted November 1 through April 30 each year.

All primary heating types may qualify for assistance, including oil, propane, electric, kerosene, coal, cord wood, wood pellets, and natural gas. Fuel assistance covers the cost of heat that is used during the length of the program.

You can apply online for free through BCAC's customer portal, or you can call 413-445-4503 for the Central/South County office or 413-663-3014 for the North County office. Be prepared with necessary identification and documents. For a full list of what you'll need, visit BCAC's website.

To be eligible, your household income cannot exceed 60% of MA's estimated State Median Income (see fuel rate card here). If you are eligible for fuel assistance you may also be eligible for a discount on your utilities.

BCAC offers additional programs to help with heating system repair and replacement. Primarily these programs are designed to assist with emergency "no heat" situations. There are also energy efficiency and weatherization assistance programs to explore on their site.
